Another "me-too": We have been hit by what I believe is this bug.
We use LVM2 on top of MD (RAID1) and take snapshots of logical volumes for backup. After a recent long-overdue upgrade to lenny, the very first backup of /home (residing on its own logical volume) hung during snapshot creation. Since the filesystem is xfs which has to be frozen during snapshot creation, the whole system became unstable. Processes remained blocked even after xfs was unfrozen, and could not be killed. The only option was to hard-reset the box.
Perhaps xfs freezing (why is it necessary on a journaled filesystem anyway?!) contributed to the damage. Nevertheless, snapshot creation hang is a real problem, and has nothing to do with LVM2 deadlocking itself when backing up configuration to /var. Also, it never happened in 2.6.18 back in etch.
