In sid, with vlc 1.0.1-2, running qvlc produces the class {"vlc",
"Vlc"} on the main UI window, which is quite reasonable. So that is
an improvement.
Running cvlc, or running qvlc on a file which displays similar
behavior to that in #362976 (which seems to have changed a bit now; it
says "VLC (XVideo output)" rather than "VLC (X11 Output)") results in
no window class on that window.
