As I mentioned earlier in this bug, the main problem isn't convincing us why they are needed, it's the lack of any patches to address this shortcoming in sbuild. More than anything else, we need someone to do the work to implement resolving of alternative build deps. If you have the time to look into it, a patch implementing alternative build-dep installation would be very much appreciated. The current sbuild code now has the ability to select alternative build dependency algorithms (so as to no affect backward compatibility and allow such experimentation), so it should be reasonably straightfoward to add an additional algorithm.
