I presume there's a misunderstanding here. My wording above was too
generic: the bug is caused when the DEBEMAIL variable *of*
*/etc/pbuilderrc* is set to something else than the empty string. That
variable, AFAICT, has nothing to do with the environment variable having
the same name.
In fact, now that I've the proper setup I don't have the problem
anymore, and with "proper setup" I mean empty DEBEMAIL in /etc/pbuiderrc
and my usual (non empty) $DEBEMAIL environment variable.
