Hi,
finally I've come around to add debugging symbols (i.e. comment out dh_strip -
this explains the unusual version number above) and reproduce the error and get
a backtrace. NB: In the meantime it has been working for some pdfs - but not
for all...
Now the error message I got was somewhat more verbose:

Maybe you can extract some information from here... Judging from the mention of
lignomeprint, the problem might go away, as soon as upstream switched away from
this...
