Yes exactly. Now I also cleaned out /usr/local/lib and ran ldconfig... works like a charm now.
Thanks for teaching me, now I know how to find problems with shared libraries using gdb. I would be nice if vlc gave a nicer error messages but- I guess we can close this bug.
