thanks

I haven't checked with the recently-released 1.0.21 yet (I tend to wait until
the new alsa releases make it into debian before installing them), but with
1.0.20 this bug is still present. I filed a bug over at alsa-project.org
(https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3913) which I realize I
neglected to mark in this bug report here. The response I received there was
that Dell has set an option in the bios indicating that the line-in jack was
only to be used for input, despite the actual capabilities of the hardware -
and from their perspective the drivers are behaving correctly by not enabling
that option. I was able to hack around the additional checks in 1.0.16, (my
modifications are posted on the alsa-project.org bug report) but that
workaround was broken by other changes in 1.0.17 that I haven't been able to
find. My current workaround is to keep a copy of linux 2.6.24 installed, which
contains the alsa code from around version 1.0.15, and use that when I want to
achieve surround sound.
