When the screensaver has been activated, either by timeout or by the command line, it ignores input (key presses and mouse movements) during the fade animation. This is a change from previous behavior where the screensaver could be aborted by user action during this animation. Now users with password-protected screensavers are required to enter their password, which is extremely frustrating when an application (i.e. Flash) does not inhibit the screensaver.
