This bug has been fixed in unstable and testing, but it also seems to be present in the gnucash in stable. My sister had been using gnucash on stable, but it started crashing. The crashes were fixed by upgrading gnucash to testing.
It's pretty horrible for your finance program to start crashing and make your data not accessible. Since there's a known fix that does not involve a new upstream version, perhaps the fix could be put into stable in a point release? -- see shy jo
