Sure, you can do that with any unpackaged software. Writing that here in this bug report mostly just sounds like a dig at the developer of googleearth-package (i.e. me). I'll assume that wasn't the intent. So okay, here's a better suggestion: if you're an end-user frustrated with the progress of googleearth-package, but want a package-managed solution, you might want to try using the Ubuntu Medibuntu googleearth package. It's AFAICT legally questionable (I don't see that they have any license to package and then redistribute), but technically works fine.
