Does it help to move ~/News/marks out of the way?  See etc/GNUS-NEWS:

Note that the gnus package in Debian is No Gnus, but it does not support
emacs22, so I guess a lot of people will be bitten by this problem if
they had used it with emacs21 in the past, but then upgraded to emacs22.
