did you have to change them from 755 or to 755?  if from, what were
they, and if to, to what?

yes, multiple people have been reporting this problem.  from what
i understand, it is now fixed in the latest version of unstable.
however, if you get this error in sarge, your best bet is to use
the cactid poller.

yes, you have to do what you did in 4) with the web interface
after you've installed cactid if you're going to use the cactid
poller.

okay.  unfortunately there won't be any documentation updates for
the version in sarge, but we can leave this bug report open as long
as woody is around so other people can use it as a reference.  i'll
also put a mention in README.Debian in unstable, though i don't expect
many people will be reading it before upgrading.
