As of aspell 0.60 'aspell -l' option is no longer equivalent to list. For
large buffers flyspell runs 'aspell -l' to get a list of mispellings and
fails. This will be fixed when a patched flyspell is included in the
dictionaries-common policy.

There is some new stuff in dictionaries-common I would like to have
extensively checked before passing to adding flyspell. I would also prefer 
to monitor emacs and xemacs CVS before and wait a bit to make sure last
upstream flyspell.el is mature enough. 

That means do not expect big changes in approx 1 month. 

Rob, if in the meantime you want to fix this in emacs, let me know so I
provide you with the appropriate patch.
