Package: emacs22-gtk Version: 22.2+2-5 Severity: normal
One of those 'happens sometimes for no apparent reason' problems. In a terminal window in my Gnome desktop, I type 'emacs', expecting emacs22-gtk to appear. It does not. The terminal window loses focus, the disk and cpu work for a few seconds, then nothing. There is no error message. The shell prompt in the terminal does not reappear. I can use CTL-C to regain a shell prompt. The command 'xmessage foo' produces a window, as expected. The command 'emacs -nw' produces emacs running in the terminal, as expected. But I cannot get emacs to run in its own frame. The problem seems to occur some hours after booting, unpredictably. Once it starts, it stays stuck until I reboot or going into single-user mode and back. The last time it happened I tried running 'strace emacs' and hit CTL-C after a second or two. The trace ends with this, ----- strace fragment start ---- gettimeofday({1249252946, 912223}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252946, 912413}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [4], [4], NULL, NULL) = 1 (out [4]) writev(4, [{";\0\5\0\223\2\340\2\0\0\0\0\37\0\0\0000\2\r\0C\0\5\0\275\0\340\2\223\2\340\2\37"..., 112}], 1) = 112 read(4, 0x8df8e54, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(4, 0x8df8e54, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) gettimeofday({1249252946, 912746}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [3 4], NULL, NULL, {0, 495665}) = 0 (Timeout) gettimeofday({1249252947, 408226}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252947, 408278}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [3 4], NULL, NULL, {0, 133}) = 0 (Timeout) gettimeofday({1249252947, 412156}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252947, 412222}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252947, 412414}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [4], [4], NULL, NULL) = 1 (out [4]) writev(4, [{";\0\5\0\223\2\340\2\0\0\0\0\37\0\0\0000\2\r\0C\0\5\0\275\0\340\2\223\2\340\2\37"..., 112}], 1) = 112 read(4, 0x8df8e54, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(4, 0x8df8e54, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) gettimeofday({1249252947, 412747}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [3 4], NULL, NULL, {0, 495664}) = 0 (Timeout) gettimeofday({1249252947, 908224}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252947, 908277}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [3 4], NULL, NULL, {0, 134}) = 0 (Timeout) gettimeofday({1249252947, 912158}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252947, 912230}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252947, 912429}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [4], [4], NULL, NULL) = 1 (out [4]) writev(4, [{";\0\5\0\223\2\340\2\0\0\0\0\37\0\0\0000\2\r\0C\0\5\0\275\0\340\2\223\2\340\2\37"..., 112}], 1) = 112 read(4, 0x8df8e54, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(4, 0x8df8e54, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) gettimeofday({1249252947, 912791}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [3 4], NULL, NULL, {0, 495620}) = 0 (Timeout) gettimeofday({1249252948, 408222}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252948, 408274}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [3 4], NULL, NULL, {0, 137}) = 0 (Timeout) gettimeofday({1249252948, 412155}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252948, 412225}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1249252948, 412426}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [4], [4], NULL, NULL) = 1 (out [4]) writev(4, [{";\0\5\0\223\2\340\2\0\0\0\0\37\0\0\0000\2\r\0C\0\5\0\275\0\340\2\223\2\340\2\37"..., 112}], 1) = 112 read(4, 0x8df8e54, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(4, 0x8df8e54, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) gettimeofday({1249252948, 412766}, NULL) = 0 select(5, [3 4], NULL, NULL, {0, 495645} <unfinished ...> ----- strace fragment end ---- Please let me know if I can provide more information. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.2 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-2-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages emacs22-gtk depends on: ii emacs22-bin-common 22.2+2-5 The GNU Emacs editor's shared, arc ii libasound2 1.0.16-2 ALSA library ii libatk1.0-0 1.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.7-18 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.6.4-7 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libgif4 4.1.6-6 library for GIF images (library) ii libglib2.0-0 2.16.6-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.12-1~lenny1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libice6 2:1.0.4-1 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libjpeg62 6b-14 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libncurses5 5.7+20081213-1 shared libraries for terminal hand ii libpango1.0-0 1.20.5-5 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.27-2+lenny2 PNG library - runtime ii libsm6 2:1.0.3-2 X11 Session Management library ii libtiff4 3.8.2-11.2 Tag Image File Format (TIFF) libra ii libx11-6 2:1.1.5-2 X11 client-side library ii libxft2 2.1.12-3 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxpm4 1:3.5.7-1 X11 pixmap library ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime emacs22-gtk recommends no packages.
