Package: ftp.debian.org

Please change the package priority for makedev from 'required' to
'extra'. I have just uploaded version 2.3.1-89 implementing this
change, but realize the overrides information also needs to be updated.

The makedev package is *not* essential, and for years policy and the
package documentation have suggested conditional forms of usage that
will not fail if the package is uninstalled. In fact, I am now happily
running several of my systems with the package completely purged. Thus
there should be no significant package changes required in response to
this change.

For Linux systems, makedev is now largely irrelevant due to udev. For
the Hurd, there is already a different package to create directories.
And the BSD folks apparently don't care either.

There are still some valid use cases for makedev (particularly on
embedded systems) that prevent me from suggesting complete elimination
of the package, but it clearly should not be of such high priority
today.

Thank you for your attention!

Bdale
