I guess you're right that no more work-arounds should be applied without fixing the driver. It looks like they closed the bug in xserver-xorg-video-intel because it stopped happening. Using the xorg.conf workaround of
Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps" "on" ... is not really a fix either.
