Check their respective documentation, and follow > the README.Debian in xfce4-session. Well this system doesn't have a login manager. I start Xfce with startx. README.Debian ignores that case. My user id is now in the polkituser group and reboot still does only a logout. This may be fixed by using GDM but I am satisfied to exit to the command console and reboot or shutdown from there. That way, startx and [Log Out] are symmetrical. If Xfce developers can make the logout gadget more functional, that is good but not necessary. Thanks for the advice, ...
