This is actually a bug in update-inetd, which outputs this message for xinetd users. Due to an error in that script, it outputs a newline to standard output, which interacts badly with debconf. I have passed this information onto the update-inetd maintainer (see bug #489494). It is possible for me to work around this bug in wu-ftpd's post-installation script however, so the next version of the package will include the workaround.
