Qouting the relevat part of #54798: If you read the dpkg --help you'll see that : dpkg --print-architecture print target architecture (uses GCC) You should be using dpkg --print-installation-architecture ... this is a common mistake and it should be in a debian developers FAQ if there was one. Without gcc, dpkg --print-architecture is failing and caused your package postinst to abort (note the empty arch string outputted by console-data debug line)... dpkg --help doesn't mention anymore the requirment for gcc for --print-architecture.
