vmtoolsd works for me by providing the correct plugin directory and by stating the full path:

/usr/bin/vmtoolsd --plugin-path /etc/vmware-tools/plugins --background /var/run/vmtoolsd.pid

For some reasons vmtoolsd searches in "/usr/lib/open-vm-tools/" and not "/usr/lib/open-vm-tools/plugins" or "/etc/vmware-tools/plugins" as stated somewhere on the projects wiki.

The full path seems to be needed for daemon mode. Otherwise vmtoolsd is not able to find its own binary on forking.

After modifying the init script the daemon runs fine.
