It has been identified clearly in this bug report that it doesn't
occur on recent versions (there are mentions of test from myself that
everything is OK with 3.3.2 on client and serve sides, others have
mentioned no problem with 3.2.5 on both sides, etc.).

It does not mean we will try to backport each and every fix from
upstream to samba in etch, particularly in such cases where the right
fix is unknown. When it comes at packages versions in oldstable (aka
etch), the only fixes you'll see are security fixes).

That bug is something that got fixed upstream between
3.0.24 and 3.2.5. This is about everything we know.

I'm really sorry that this is hitthing you hard but I think that the
only way is upgrading your server. Anyway, etch will soon be entirely
out of support, includng security-wise.
