It returns "Default". But it is now working properly, for no obvious reason. The computer was upgraded again and rebooted in the last few days, but I had switched away from gnome to xfce4 and so I cannot connect the recovery with any particular action. Somewhere in there (although I'm a bit hazy on the timing) was an interrupted aptitude safe-upgrade. I got a request to do a "dpkg ??? -a" command.
So, quite possibly, the bug report was sent at a point where gnome-terminal was upgraded but its configuration info was not, or vice-versa. If so, it's not an "important" bug, but rather a "minor" bug, and the bug report should change to complain about the error message. (The error message should be informative and help the user understand the problem. Assertion failures are generally not good error messages.)
