 AFAIUI, it matters on architectures that I don't really have access to
 (I mean interactive access, I don't care about millisecond differences
 in this case, which exist even on i386)

 The non-standard name is the name used by the X packages, so I'm just
 following lead here.

 If you guys settle on something I'll be happy to implement it in the
 package.  I use FTGL in my own projects, which means that I'll notice
 if performance goes down because of a particular change.
