I am working on splitting the libnss-ldapd package. In fact, some of the
work is already done:
http://arthurdejong.org/svn/nss-ldapd/nss-pam-ldapd/
http://arthurdejong.org/viewvc/nss-ldapd/nss-pam-ldapd/

This changes the current source package nss-ldapd into nss-pam-ldapd and
splits into the binary packages nslcd, libnss-ldapd and libpam-ldapd (it
also adds a PAM module which is also used in nssov).

Some more information and background can be found here:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2009/05/msg00526.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2009/06/msg00045.html

There will probably be one or two more releases in the 0.6 series with
the old packaging and with 0.7 make the switch to the new name and
packaging. Before this can happen the new packaging should be tested
more, password changing through PAM should be implemented, the changes
need to be synchronized to the OpenLDAP tree and some documentation
needs to be written.

If you want to help you are more then welcome to test what is already
there (you should probably already increase the package version and add
"Conflicts: libnss-ldapd (< 0.7.0)" to the nslcd package.
