I have the same problem on Sarge. It seems to be due to the fact that NEdit uses a large font for its menu, and always makes the window wide enough to be able to display the menu in a single line.
I think that NEdit uses a large default font when it cannot find the one it requires. It uses the same default than xfontsel with -*-*-medium-r-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1, which is -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--17-120-100-100-m-100-iso8859-1 on my system.
