Upstream suggests to use a post-connection script for this. And, probably in
1.6.3, scripts will be passed arguments (bssid, essid) too.

I'm not an expert, but doesn't a

    ifconfig <iface> mtu <number>

suffice?

Anyhow, I agree that #520902 should be fixed.
