I wrote an additional email explaining that it does work under some conditions but perhaps it did not arrive.. The problem is apparently some keyboard modifier stuck in the vnc server which causes the keyboard combination to come out differently. That is pressing each of lshift, rshift, lctrl, rctrl, .. separately and then pressing the keyboard combination or selecting it in the menu would work. This is probably the result of closing the previous viewer with a window manager shortcut. Perhaps at least the send menu could take care of this situation. I am not sure if it is possible to get other keys stuck but that would be harder to achieve and perhaps more obvious.
