1) I never manually changed it and it is "gnome-wm". But indeed "unset
   key" sets it to metacity.

2) It does not seem to make a smidgen of difference. /usr/bin/gnome-wm
   was not being run and I was getting metacity.

Switching window manager seems to be done like this:

killall metacity
sawfish&
disown
Menu System / Preferences / Startup Applications / Options / Remember
Currently-Running Application
