I tried to activate the VERBOSE option by inserting VERBOSE="yes" after line 26 in /etc/init.d/module-init.tools It seems that loading the "loop" module causes the problem on my system. Since I have Debian running on many systems and this is the only one with this effect, I guess it might be hardware related. I suggest collecting hardware info about our systems having the problem. As a start, here is my main board: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ (/proc/cpuinfo) I have additional issues with this hardware: I could not upgrade to 4 GB RAM (from 1 GB using the same RAM with bigger capacity). And I had to disable the quick BIOS check to be able to boot from the SATA HDDs.
