I was fooled by a comment in the configure that clamd support will be builtin always. But anyhow my recommendation to libclamav still counts for most cases because dansguardian is able to config more things from inside the library.
If you want I can provide you with a lenny package with reenabled clamd support. I also plan to provide some recent dansguardian packages for lenny-backports which will also have clamd support enabled..
