ok, hope this goes into the log now.

the blank window is due to the windowmanager. awesome, xmonad, dwm all
seem to have this problem. the window's content doesn't get drawn
properly. the scicos shell is actually active, so typing in the blank
window you can execute commands, you just don't see your typing, the
output or anything else.

with other wm's i tested it works as expected.
