This is not a gcom bug! It's not gcom's job to handle the devices, this has to be done by the kernel/udev. Unfortunately I don't have such a stick to reproduce the problem but looking at your dmesg output I think that the stick is just handled like a scsi CD-ROM instead of a modem. Please provide the output of "lsmod".
