Specifically, I was not able to mount the partition using pmount nor use fdisk to view the partition information on the drive. As the previous user indicated the problem seems to be a conflict with another daemon as subsequent execution of 'ls /dev/sd*' result in the appearance and disappearance of my partition /dev/sda1. Also Windows XP does not report any device nor partition problems.
