Actually, I'm wondering if the sound problem is just a symptom, not
the real problem.
Using artsplay just made it hang in a different way, without any zombie.
The problem is in your soudn installation I think. Gajim indeed never
check if process is finished, because it cannot know how long it should
last. Gajim launch aplay without waiting it finishes (else Gajim would
freeze while playing sound) and without timeout (in case you want to
play a 2h long music when someone connects.
aplay should not block, and I don't think we can do something about that.
