Hi all, To get 0.5.6 to work I had to install packages ia32-libs (for most of the required libraries) and ia32-libs-gtk (for libgthread).
I then needed to ... $ sudo mv /usr/lib/googleearth/libssl.so.0.9.8 \ /usr/lib/googleearth/libssl.so.0.9.8.moved.for.workaround ... to get my newly-built googleearth_5.0.11733.9347+0.5.6-1_amd64.deb installation to run happily. It looks like googleearth-package should depend on ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk, and should move what will be /usr/lib/googleearth/libssl.so.0.9.8 out of the way, as is done for libcrypto.so.0.9.8.
