Ehm.. I admit I have a minimal mutt configuration (and the same for
the interaction between reportbug & mutt), but I don't see this here:

mo...@sandrotosi:~$ reportbug -O --debug --mua mutt checkgmail
*** Welcome to reportbug. Use ? for help at prompts. ***
Detected character set: UTF-8
Please change your locale if this is incorrect.

Using 'Sandro Tosi <mo...@debian.org>' as your from address.
Getting status for checkgmail...

and

mo...@sandrotosi:~$ grep mutt .reportbugrc
mutt
mo...@sandrotosi:~$ reportbug -O --debug checkgmail
*** Welcome to reportbug. Use ? for help at prompts. ***
Detected character set: UTF-8
Please change your locale if this is incorrect.

Using 'Sandro Tosi <mo...@debian.org>' as your from address.
Getting status for checkgmail...

Let me know if there's some "special" config on your side.

Cheers,
