backupninja is not the system that does the backup itself, it is a
meta-backup system, things like rdiff-backup and duplicity are what do
the backup and they would not stop working when a mailer was not
installed. backupninja, on the otherhand, was designed to communicate by
default, and as such removing the ability to send mail out is not as
simple as moving the package from Depends to Recommends.
