This is strange. Can you send me

1. redirected output of your 'listening' script with a track that
   contains non-ASCII characters
2. and the actual 'listening' script

And, can you try

1. generating and setting your locale to en_US.UTF-8 before running Gaim
   - I just played that exact track (from Ágætis Byrjun, yeah?) with my
   setup, and it doesn't seem to break.
2. seeing if Gaim throws any warnings onto stderr when trying to create
   the autoprofile (Glib-based stuff is generally good about describing
   when it screws up)
