The second patch I sent appears to be working correctly.  Feel free to add 
that patch to your experimental tree.  I've committed part of the patch 
already.

I'm out of town until next week, so probably no new release until I'm back.  
The current development repo (arg0.net/darcs -- see encfs summary) contains 
these fixes (along with a fix for links to root: "ln -s / foo").
