That indeed returns

        /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf

Possibly the freetype-font configuration variable in ~/.config/vlc/vlcrc was
set to freefont/FreeSerifBold.ttf. However, I certainly did not do that.
