You can work around this symptom by using creating an /etc/modprobe.d/foo
with these contents:
options snd slots=snd-intel8x0
(This functionality is the preferred mechanism to negative index masks. If
you wish, you can even use "options snd slots=snd-intel8x0,snd-usb-audio",
but it's functionally equivalent for your use case to the first line.)
