Followup-For: Bug #450832
Followup-For: Bug #460565
Package: gnome-applets
Version: 2.22.3-3

Presently, though gnome-applets' version number did not change, I cannot reproduce this bug any more, the applet appears and remains on the panel correctly.

It is another question, that it has not much use:
When I plug in an USB pendrive, it gets mounted automatically (correctly)
to /mnt and a Nautilus window opens with /mnt. The disk icon of the applet
says "mnt (not mounted)", and by left-click, it has 2 options:
Open mnt
Mount mnt.
The first is grey (not active), though it would have some sense.
The second is useless, since it is already mounted.
The applet does not give an unmount option.
When I unmount the device (e.g., from Nautilus), an additional disk icon appears in the panel saying, e.g., "SanDisk Cruser Micro (not mounted)".
This disappears when I draw out the device.
Quite incoherent behavior.
Also, on one of my Debian boxes which has USB connectors, the applet gives
only disk icons for Floppy and CD-ROM, but not for USB (/mnt).
