Before removing it, would you consider posting a message to the
h...@octave.org list asking whether anyone (or group) would like to
start maintaining it?  Maybe the message should also go to the
maintain...@octave.org and octave-...@lists.sourceforge.net lists.

OTOH, maybe we should just let it die and try to get more effort put
into the OpenGL-based graphics code for core Octave.
