Unless I am mistaken, all I need then is to adjust the Depends: in
debian/control as the last Upload dealt with no longer installing the fonts
themselves:
gretl (1.8.0-4) unstable; urgency=low
* debian/rules: Do not install four fonts files in gretl-common
(Closes: #520372)
* debian/control: Added 'Depends: ttf-freefont, ttf-bitstream-vera' for
gretl-common to have the fonts provided

Dirk,
Hi. As long as the package doesn't call the Vera font directly that
would work. If it does, it might be problematic as I think the fonts
have different names even though they are pretty much identical. I will
try to get more information. I know in some of the games packages we
actually had to install symlinks to the fonts.
