Package: postgresql-8.3 Version: 8.3.7-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable
I installed postgresql using the command: aptitude update; aptitude install postgresql (postgresql depends on postgresql-8.3) I try to start postgresql by running this command: /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 start However, it does not start. When I tried to debug the /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 and the /usr/share/postgresql-common/init.d-functions scripts, I found that the later is trying to look for /etc/postgresql/8.3 directory. But, as I mentioned this directory is missing. I found the following postgresql related .deb files: nifty:/var/cache/apt/archives# ls postgresql*.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql_8.3.7-1_all.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-8.3_8.3.7-1_amd64.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-client-8.3_8.3.7-1_amd64.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-client-common_98_all.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-common_98_all.deb However, none of them have the /etc/postgresql directory. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages postgresql-8.3 depends on: ii libc6 2.9-4 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcomerr2 1.41.3-1 common error description library ii libgssapi-krb5-2 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-9 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries - k ii libkrb5-3 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-9 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries ii libldap-2.4-2 2.4.11-1 OpenLDAP libraries ii libpam0g 1.0.1-7 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpq5 8.3.6-1 PostgreSQL C client library ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8g-15 SSL shared libraries ii libxml2 2.7.3.dfsg-1 GNOME XML library ii locales 2.9-4 GNU C Library: National Language ( ii postgresql-client-8.3 8.3.7-1 front-end programs for PostgreSQL ii postgresql-common 98 PostgreSQL database-cluster manage ii ssl-cert 1.0.23 simple debconf wrapper for OpenSSL ii tzdata 2009b-1 time zone and daylight-saving time postgresql-8.3 recommends no packages.
