Here is a workaround that appears to solve all of the problems I mentioned in the initial report. This is necessarily specific to a Dell Dimension 8400 with similar BIOS (mine is version A01 of 07/17/04).
1. Before booting the install disk, enter the BIOS "System Setup". 2. Using the menu, select "Drives". 3. From the resulting submenu, select "SATA Operation". 4. From the 4 operation modes offered, select RAID Autodetect / ATA . The other three options are RAID Autodetect / AHCI RAID On Combination 5. Boot the install disk. 6. At the prompt, enter "expert26".
