The "aptitde safe-upgrade" eventually completed but with an error message:
dpkg: error processing libatlas3gf-sse2 (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 30 I then tried removing the package with "aptitude remove libatlas3gf-sse2". This was successful and no other packages were removed. So, I have no idea why aptitude installed this package.
