I can’t reproduce this with the same fontforge version on stable and on unstable Debian releases. In addition, I believe that it is Xorg problem. This is a message from the fontforge program, but it clearly says about the X-server problem. Unfortunately, I do not know what to advise you. Maybe you should try to edit the file /etc/X11/Xorg.conf, or turn off the visual effect if you use them.
