QEMU version 0.9.1-10 is in use. There are problems with real mode emulation on intel chips. I think this is what hits you (things should probably look better on an amd machine).
There have been improvements with recent kvm versions but I don't think it's really fixed yet. I just checked with kvm 83 and it's still slower than qemu.
