Well, yeah, same thing. In fact, the output in my first post
was obtained that way ;-)

It's been happening across a few reboots, too, so it's
likely not a Heisenbug.

The fact that sound works fine even after this fails seems
to hint towards the idea that maybe on re-detection ALSA
fails to detect that the card has *already* been detected
previously somehow and reports failure of the re-detection ?

Maybe I've got some obsolete OSS/whatever sound system
lurking around/package installed ? How do I find out ?
